Modifications... [Mar. 22nd, 2005|08:58 pm]
[mood |uncomfortableuncomfortable]

So, I had a doctor's appointment yesterday. I've been having this nagging problem in my arm. I get a little in the left, but mostly in the right. For instance, when driving. The vibration drives me crazy. If I put on a sweater at work, anything that touches my hand and use my mouse...it drives me crazy.

So, I'm thinking it really doesn't quite fit the profile of Carpal Tunnel. But after 5 or 6 months, I'm at my wits end with annoyance. It feels like there is sandpaper inside my hand. Sometimes I get "flashes" in my elbow or shoulder.

It was upon meeting with the doctor that the torture started.

I say to him "It really doesn't fit the profile". We talk about an old hairline fracture I had. Discuss possible x-rays. He prescribes Corticosteroids and an anti-inflammatory that warns "Limit alcohol intake because it may INCREASE the risk of stomach bleeding". This means that's already a risk with the medicine alone. Damn good thing I don't drink much.

Then he says "I want you to take this medication while you are on vacation. And wear this...

After you get back, I want you to have some tests done."

Okay, let me clarify that "some tests" means Nerve Conduction and Electromyographs. Needles, electricity and me.

If you've never seen a grown woman throw a hissy fit....it wasn't a pretty sight.

So, the brace is not exactly comfortable. I am concerned I am going to damage myself even further with it, honestly. Like when driving my car. Trying to type at work. It cuts down on some of that "vibration" because it's got that pressure thing going. I'm also supposed to sleep in this device. I woke up this morning and my arm was naked. I don't remember taking it off.

Anyhow, tonight at work I was considering some modifications to this lovely thing as I am apparently stuck with it for a while.

I'm going to see if I can find some lambs wool at a cloth store. Line the inside. As the edges are rather unsoftlike. I put some moleskin on the really rough edges for the moment.

I also plan on removing the laces and replacing them with some pretty white lace ribbon. Then snipping the unused edges of the velcro.

I considered painting the whole thing white...then remembered the video of Michael Jackson's "Black and White"...I think he wore something that looked like this. Nevermind. I'll go with the ribbons.

Yeah. Don't do the Michael Jackson look. They may not let you near children anymore.

Which for you would be rather an issue.

I have used one of those things for a long time. I completely believed that it would do more harm than good but I take back my words for that. I couldn't wear my to work because I was a baker but that's exactly what caused the carpal tunnel. Anyway, it grows on you and hopefully soon it will be comforting to take the pressure off the wrist with your brace. Repetitive strain injuries in the hands and arms affect every aspect of life so hopefully that you're looking into and doing something about it now will help you get back to normal.

Oh, if you wear it at night or for long periods of time it will get a gross sweaty odour. I used an old sock and cut the "foot" part off and used the ankle tube part and cut a hole for my thumb. That absorbed the sweat and the sock was easier to wash or throw out if I was lazy.

Bonne chance!
